Founded in 1952 by René Ramillon and André Vincent, Moncler (the name is derived from the small French mountain village Monestier-de-Clermont) has established itself as a world-leader in keeping you warm in extreme climates while showcasing their sought after and unique “slope to streetwear” styles.
Moncler’s development from their early days producing mountaineering sleeping bags, lined capes, tents and early quilted jackets (initially used to go over the overalls of their own factory workers) has been nothing short of phenomenal.
From the early 1980’s onwards, Moncler rolled out the first lacquered effect down jackets using loud primary colours and their own unique stitching processes. We were presented with jackets that were chic, functional, performant and also expensive!
Regards their relatively high cost, you have to recognise the build quality, design and uniqueness of their garments comes at a price – typical base materials include dense lightweight Japanese nylon, satin linings, white geese down, coyote fur trim as well as other quality yarns and innovative and hard-wearing components.
It was also during the 80’s that Moncler came to the attention of the Paninaro (a collective group of affluent Italian teenagers named after a sandwich from Il Panino, a popular snack bar in Milan) who developed a sub-culture based on a mixture of European and American fashion brands such as Levi, Armani, Ralph Lauren, Stone Island and of course, brightly-coloured Moncler down jackets.
2003 saw Moncler under the ownership of their former Creative Director Remo Ruffini; after moving Moncler’s HQ to Milan and taking the company public, Ruffini concentrated in redefining the brand for a whole new generation of Customers.
Under Ruffini’s ongoing stewardship, Moncler’s focus has been three fold: function, fashion and diversity of product. Product quality has been double-downed on and there has also been a significant shift from just being a wholesaler with over 200 Moncler retail shops open across the globe.
